VISITING A NEW PLACE
One of the things I love about reading is that I get to experience new places. To find out the customs and activities that are a reality for the characters in a setting that I may never have experienced before. It’s like taking a trip without ever leaving my house.
I admit when I write, I try to think about the pleasure I find in experiencing new settings, and try to include details for others to enjoy. This is also why I tend to write about places I’ve visited or lived. I love adding the little touches of what the characters would notice, whether it’s the snow lying underfoot that’s been trampled by enthusiastic children, or the smell of the fresh-turned earth as someone prepares a garden in the spring.
In the Six Pack Ranch series, the setting is a rural location in Alberta, Canada. The ranch house, the land, the barns and outbuildings all set against the rolling foothills of the Canadian Rocky mountains. The big landscape panoramas are like those you’d see in the movie Brokeback Mountain, which was actually filmed south of where I’ve placed the Coleman land.
But it’s not just the big details, it’s the medium ones. Like the community fair and quilting fund-raiser that happen in Rocky Mountain Desire—those kind of events are still a huge part of life for the people who farm and ranch. For the smaller towns in the wide open spaces of the prairies and grasslands of Canada and the USA.
I sometimes wonder if readers who live in the big cities, or in other countries, think these things are made up. But really, it’s like visiting a foreign land. Different customs, different attitudes, different way of life. Different doesn’t mean better, just something out of your norm. And I love getting to share that with you.

#3 in the Six Pack Ranch |
Nothing comes easy. You’ve gotta work for it.
Matt Coleman always figured at this point in his life, he’d be settled down with a family. Since his ex split for the big city, though, no way will he give anyone else the chance to drop-kick his heart. Physical pleasure? Hell, yeah, he’ll take—and give—with gusto, but nothing more.
Hope Meridan is working long hours to hold on to her new quilt shop, going it alone since her sister/business partner ran off. Sex? Right, like she’s got the time. Not that she doesn’t have the occasional dirty fantasy about Matt. Fat chance he’d dream of knocking boots with her—the younger sister of the woman who dumped him. Nope, she’ll just have to settle for the F-word.
Friends would be far easier if there wasn’t something combustible going on between them. And when casual interest starts to grow into something more, their tenuous bond strengthens in the heat of desire. But it may not survive the hurricane-force arrival of the last person either of them ever wanted to see again…
Warning: Small-town rivals, men in pursuit and family meddling—in good and bad ways. Look for a cowboy who knows how to rope, ride and rein in a hell of a lot more than eight seconds of sheer bliss.
