VBT ~ King Cobra by Jayne Rylon

Let me welcome Jayne Rylon!

Do you have a specific writing style?

Hmm… probably.  I’ve learned from co-writing with Mari Carr that a lot of what I took for granted in my own writing is really a style.  Her and I are very different in how we write.  I think readers must know within one paragraph of starting a Compass book which one of us took the lead on it!  I’d say my style tends to be pretty dramatic.  Not for everyone.  I don’t like to stick to clich├ęs if I can help it and I try to always push the envelope, which may cross the believability line for some audiences.  One of my fetishes in evaluating my own writing is eliminating repeats.  I hate echoed words!  They drive me bananas.  Sometimes I know this leads me to make awkward vocabulary choices but I work a lot on finding a happy medium.  To me, how you say something should be as interesting as what you say.  I think I have times where I’m more successful at this than others but I always strive for adding a little sparkle with my words and descriptions.

How did you come up with the title?

All of the books in the Hot Rods series are named after the car the main hero or heroine of the book drives, along with an adjective that describes them.  King Cobra is about Eli, the head of the Hot Rods garage.  He drives a Shelby Cobra.   Future books in the series are titled MUSTANG Sally, Super NOVA, REBEL on the Run, SWINGER style, and BARRACUDA’s Heart.  I have a lot of classic car books and my husband is into hot rods so he’s been a big help in getting my research right and providing me with fun trivia to use in the books.  I hope it comes through in the stories!

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Honestly, I think the entire Powertools series and now the spin off Hot Rods series have been about the continuum of sexuality.  I guess I feel like people aren’t always straight or gay but that there are lots of shades in between.  Each of the individual characters in these books falls on a very different place in that spectrum.  Some, like Mike, the foreman of the crew are more straight but open-minded and I’d say James was just the opposite.  Most of them fall somewhere in between, though, and that flexibility has allowed the Crew to develop a unique relationship that they are now willing to share with their friends.  The Hot Rods are kind of different in that they’re just starting and building their future state where the Crew had already been established by the beginning of Kate’s Crew and were just waiting for their ladies.  The unknown allows for a lot of angst and growing pains in the Hot Rods.  I hope readers will be patient to watch the full relationship unfold.  Ultimately, I think the stories are based on an underlying message of tolerance and respecting the boundaries of the people around you even if they’re unconventional.

Do you have any writing rituals that you do while writing?

Well… I have a set of rituals now but I feel like they may be changing soon as many were born of necessity in the days when I had a full time career as the Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis for a Fortune 500 company in addition to writing.  As of writing this, I have just three days left working both jobs before becoming a full time author!  OMG & EEK.  So… old rituals include writing in the dead of night when the house is dark and quiet.  I usually am in my PJ’s and I used to write in bed on my laptop with my husband sleeping next to me until we renovated a room in our house as my office earlier this year.  Hopefully, in my new world, I will be getting up early, going to the gym then coming home to write.  Maybe have some Raman noodles or spaghetti o’s for lunch then write some more until it’s time to start dinner for Mr. Rylon.  Hoping that I can reach my word count goals while he’s at work and then actually get to spend some time with him in the evenings, maybe while sneaking on Facebook or taking care of the business of writing from the couch upstairs.  That’s the plan anyway, let’s see what happens!

What types of books do you enjoy reading in your free time or what do you like to do with your free time?

Honestly, I haven’t had any free time in the past five years or so as I was working a full time career as the Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis for a Fortune 500 company in addition to my career as an author.  As of the time I’m writing this I have three more days in corporate America.  I am so looking forward to catching up on the hundreds of books I’ve stockpiled in the past several years.  Some of my favorite authors include Suzanne Brockmann, Cindy Gerard, Cherry Adair, SE Jakes, Lora Leigh, Shayla Black, Sophie Oak, Lexie Blake, JD Robb, ah… too many to think of really!  In addition I’d like to maybe watch a little TV again.  Not a lot, but I haven’t watched TV in five years!  Maybe just a dancing show or Amazing Race since I love to travel.

Blurb:

Nothing’s sexier than seven men with hot rods.

Hot Rods, Book 1

After Eli’s mother died, his father honored her life’s mission as a social worker by taking in several kids from the wrong side of the tracks. Not all of them stuck, but those who did became Eli’s quasi family.
Their bonds, forged in fires set by their personal demons, are unbreakable—or so Eli wants to believe. Especially since he and Alanso, his best friend and head mechanic, witnessed the overpowering allure of polyamory while visiting the Powertools crew.
Much as Eli would like to deepen the relationships among his foster brothers and sister in the Hot Rods Restoration Team, he’s hesitant to risk everything on a quick romp behind a stack of tires.
But when Eli catches Alanso exploring their mutual fantasy at a known hookup spot in a public park, all bets are off. And Eli must decide if it’s time to jump in full throttle—and trust his instincts to guide him through the night. If the pair can dodge the potholes in their own relationship, maybe they can race together toward the unconventional arrangement with Mustang Sally they both desire.

Warning: Fasten your seatbelts, this is going to be a wild (and naughty) ride!

VBT ~ Drive me to Distraction by Caitlyn Nicholas

drivemetodistraction (1)

Blurb:

Sometimes life or death decisions are easy. Alex Radford has a choice – borrow the money to treat her mother’s rare and aggressive cancer from sleazy moneylender Hamish MacCameron. Or do nothing and watch her die.

MacCameron has an agenda. He wants Alex in his bed, and he wants her to help him exact revenge on his sworn enemy, Robert Dryden. He is only too happy to lend her what she needs, but the strings attached form a tangled web from which Alex has little hope of escape.

It’s not all bad. Since she was a girl Alex has had one dream: to become a Formula 1 driver and show the boys how to drive a race car. MacCameron’s money gives her a shot at fame, and in a move that scandalizes the F1 racing fraternity she becomes the new driver for Rob Dryden’s struggling F1 team, Prometheus.

Alex tries to keep her distance from Rob, knowing that one day she will need to betray one of the few people who ever had faith in her. But things begin to unravel when Hamish MacCameron is murdered and she and Rob are the top suspects on the list .

Caitlyn Nicholas' Bio:
I've always loved to read. I began pinching my Mum's Mills & Boons (from the teetering pile by her bed) at the age of fourteen, and cannot remember a time in my life when I was without a romance novel. From the classics (Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen is my alltime favourite - because it makes me laugh) to the contemporary (Crossstich by Diana Gabaldon, or anything by Janet Evanovich, or... okay let's not go there!) I love them all.

I began writing in 2005. Exhausted, pregnant (sure I was going to expire from morning-sickness) and coping with a demanding toddler, I decided the time was right to embark on a writing career. (In hindsight I may have been suffering from a scorching case of sleep-deprivation).

Still, it kinda worked out. My debut novel - and the first manuscript I'd ever written - Running Scared, was published by Samhain Publishing in January 2007. My next book, Secret Intentions by also published by Samhain in 2009. Then I had a short story published in the Mammoth Book of Special Ops Romance (MBSOR) in 2010 - my story is called The Grey Man.
In 2012 my novel Drive Me To Distraction was published with Momentum Books (Digital first imprint of Pan Macmillan Australia), and my novella The Danger Game came out with Escape Publishing.
You can find information and excerpts from these books by clicking on the BOOKS menu above.

Fun Facts:

  1. When I first took myself backpacking in Europe (at the tender age of 17) I was such a young innocent thing that I assumed the scantily clad young ladies hanging about in doorways near her hostel were waiting for a lift home. (They were hookers)
  2. I'm ambidexterous. I can do almost everything left and right handed, except for write - which I do left handed. (It comes in handy)
  3. I was born in England and moved to Australia in 1983. (I love them both - but I'm sorry UK, the Aussie rugby team owns my heart)
  4. I hate shopping, and am bored by shoes. My husband loves shopping and shoes. (We are a perfect match).
  5. Televisions unexpectedly turn themselves on in my presence. (Seriously, its freaky)
  6. I love to travel by train. (I often don't feel that way about my travelling companions though)
  7. I love to garden and have a huge vegetable patch - I grow awesome tomatoes - even though I loathe them and never eat them.
  8. I can speak, read and write Chinese (very rustily). Many years ago (1998) I spent three months on a language exchange in Kunming, Yunnan. I was once locked out of my apartment complex, and was caught scaling the fence by the local police. (It ended well - and there are a lot of photos of me looking slightly stressed adorning a police station somewhere)
  9. I once wanted to be a chef. I studied cooking for a summer at the Cordon Bleu cookery school in London. One of the other students was from Montana, he fell madly in love with me and begged me to go back to the States and live on his ranch. (I said no - but I've always wondered what if??)

VBT - Tess Thompson: Caramel and Magnolias

A day in the life of Tess Thompson

My best friend says I’m the most predictable person on the planet, in that I do the same thing every day, which I’m sure has some deep psychological meaning but I prefer to think of it as discipline.

I wake about the same time as my two little daughters, ages 6 and 10, and usher them into the kitchen where I make breakfast while drinking coffee and making their lunches. I treated myself to a Keurig coffeemaker recently. It makes me ridiculously happy. It’s the little things.

After the girls are ready for school, which is often an arduous process, I drop them off, watching their blond heads make their way across the playground, and take a deep breath. One more day we’re on time; it’s a small victory every morning. Again, it’s the little things.

Next, I go to the gym – either a boot camp, personal training or Zumba. After this, I go home, shower, and as we say in our writer circles, put my “butt in seat” where I write until it’s time to get the girls from school at 3. Between that time, I usually make a Lean Cuisine in the microwave, often when I find my stomach growling but sometimes because one of my friends texts me to remind me to eat.

The late afternoons are snacks for the kids, homework, and a little down time. Sometimes I sneak extra work time in while the girls watch a show or play on their Kindles, not writing but more the business side of being an author – like obsessively checking my Amazon sales rankings.

At 5 I realize I actually have to make dinner instead of just writing about it. This is where the decision is made between cooking something real, heating something in the microwave, or going to the Mongolian grill across the street. I’ll say this – the Mongolian grill should have some kind of punch card system for frequent diners.

Then, like all working moms, especially single ones like me, I blunder through the rest of the evening, bleary-eyed and exhausted, with baths, books and snuggle time. Once in awhile I have time to read or watch television. Those are great moments. It’s the little things.

Blurb:

A pace ahead of the play can send you back to the start. And put everything you’ve worked for at risk.

Single mother and submissive Rebecca Bower abandoned her career as a sports reporter to become a media consultant with her brother’s hockey team. A failed marriage to a selfish man makes her wary of getting involved with another. Unfortunately, chemistry is hard to deny, and all her hormones are dancing when she gets close to the Cobra’s sniper, Scott Demyan.

Zachary Pearce ‘came out’ to the world last season to shift attention away from a teammate. And his one night with Scott Demyan had been unsettling. There could be more there, if only Scott was a different person. Instead, a night of sensual BDSM play with Becky leaves him wanting more, but she thinks he’s gay and questions his interest. It’s been a long time since a woman has attracted him both as a man and a Dom, and he’ll do everything in his power to prove she’s the only one he needs. Or wants. His one time with Scott was a mistake.

Scott might have forgotten what happened in his childhood, but the effects linger, and he specializes in drunken one-night stands…until he meets Zach and Becky and sees what he’s missing. But neither one believes Scott can be faithful. Although he’s trying hard to clean up his act to avoid getting kicked off the team, they want more from him. He’s willing to make changes, but the most important one—putting their happiness before his own—means he’ll probably end up alone.

Excerpt:

“Good. Then shall we start? Do you understand what I expect from you?”
“Don’t move. Don’t speak unless for clarity or to safeword.”
“Excellent.” He gave her a slanted smile, then slowly circled the table, his hand moving in an outline of her body without touching her. “That dress looks lovely on you.”
“Thank you.” She groaned when he clucked his tongue. “Sorry, Sir.”
“Do you often have difficulty submitting?”
She shook her head.
“Hmm. I see.” He stopped by her side. Drew his finger up her arm from her inner wrist to her elbow. She twitched. Clenched her fists. “But you are finding it difficult to obey me?”
“No, Sir.”
“Neither safeword or clarification.” He smoothed his hand over her cheek. “All the Doms you’ve been with haven’t asked for much, have they? No don’t answer.” His tone was rough, but not with anger. More . . . carefully restrained. “I’d love to push you. Challenge you. But not yet. First you have to prove you can handle this.”
She almost said, ‘I can’, but then remembered she wasn’t supposed to say anything. The restrictions suddenly felt more imposing than any gag or restraint. She settled into the sensation, relaxing because giving him what he’d asked for was really, very simple. No guesswork involved.
The approval in his eyes was like a bright golden star bursting in the center of her chest. She inhaled deep and held her breath, waiting to see what he’d do next.
He circled the table again, stopping at her other side. Hooking his fingers to the thick straps of her dress above her shoulders, he pulled it down, moving her as he pleased, taking one arm, then the other until both were free of the dress. Only the neckline covered her breasts as he placed her arms. Her nipples tightened into sensitive little points as she waited for him to expose them, but instead he walked to the end of the table and traced his fingertips down the soles of her feet.
A giggle escaped her, and she squirmed as he did it again.
“Be still.”
And again. It tickled, but she pressed her eyes shut, ground her teeth, and fought not to move. His hand curved around her feet and she bit back a groan as he pressed his thumbs into her soles. He stroked, massaged, then tickled, alternating until the pleasure edged on torture. Yet, somehow, she kept still. Sank into a place where all that mattered was his touch. As it moved up to her calves, she sank even deeper, responding to his slow, even breaths, to his soft praise. She needed to know she had it in her to please him. To be everything he needed and wanted by doing nothing but what came naturally.
“I was right. You are precious.” He kissed her bare shoulder, then rolled the material of her dress down over her breasts. “This isn’t just sex for you. It’s so much more.”
“Yes.” She absorbed the satisfaction in his tone like earth after a drought soaked in rain. She knew she shouldn’t speak, but she had to make sure he wasn’t just doing this for her. “Am I . . . do I make you happy?”
“More than I can say.” He lowered his head to her breasts, resting his forehead between them. He kissed the side of one breast and she shivered. The sensation was both tender and erotic. Lingering, building as he kissed his way up to her nipple. “Don’t forget what I’ve asked of you.”
Don’t move.
Pleasure speared her as he sucked her nipple into his mouth. Her eyes teared as she struggled not to arch up. As she pressed her lips together.
“No man or woman has pleased me as much as you have.”
He pinched her nipple between his finger and thumb as he sucked the other.
“I won’t be easy on you, little doe.”
He shifted down her body, drawing the hem of her dress up over her hips, over her belly, kissing the exposed flesh as he worked his way down.
“But if you are mine . . . .”
His fingers traced the edge of her panties, along the sides of her pussy lips, close to where the material had grown damp. He bit down just above the slight swell of her stomach, rubbing her panties into her clit.
“I will give you what no one else can.”
The muscles in her thighs tensed. Pleasures curled up in her core, sizzling like a live wire in a shallow pool, electricity zipping across the surface.
“Come for me, little doe. Lose yourself. Give up control. It belongs to me.”
